At first I didn't want to post here because of the thought that you probably know most of the songs which I posted below, but you never know if you don't try.

probably one of best live performances.

Very true indeed. There are many cover songs which are so well done that you actually think that they are authentic. To many to mention. For example almost all cover songs made by Johnny Cash are like that. imo

If you enjoy listening to Blackmore's night then you might enjoy (or you already do) listening to Fairport
Convention – Tam Lin

One of best songs of Ritchie Blackmore when he was lead singer at Deep Purple - Soldier
of Fortune

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water, guitar rift learned by so many debutant guitarists.

Some Punk Rock cover: Walk On By -- Stranglers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqfqVDHNW6c
and original by Dionne Warwick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApMrxPJRXIQ&feature=related

Something different:
Yoshida Brothers -- Kodo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgN_xIHqLUA&feature=related

Thanks for Fairport Convention - Tam Lin, I love Blackmore's Night.
To continue the theme: Ensiferum - Tears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYEXRvl73RI&feature=related

And here's some ambient: Amethystium - Garden of Sakuntala http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RBr_hNtoP4&feature=related

Nice pick. While you already mentioned Yoshida Brothers .. Kevin Kmetz and Takahashi Chikuzan

Nina Simone - Sinnerman

The Stooges - Search And Destroy

Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin

if you will like this one - Patty Pravo - Nel giardino dell'amore, you can search on the internet for the lyrics

Natalie Merchant - Ophelia

Spirit - Dark Eyed Woman - one of the most underrated music bands in music history.

you might find this interesting

I was quite surprised when I've found out how many rhythm and blues songs were covered and partly ''borrowed'' by many very well known music bands. I've asked a colleague who is a musician and this syndrome is quite frequent in the music history.

One of my Horse Archers unit is called "David Bowie" :))
Bauhaus -- Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars (David Bowie Cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTyePL5JvVI

All music are once new. What is now called "old music" and "classic rock" was once making young girls screamed and threw their wet panties to the rockers. Even in classical music, Haydn had his own groupies and there are accounts that Mozart shagged a few too.

Here is Alan Parson's Project, to match Spoon's Pink Floyd. It has the "Game" theme:

Alan Parson's Project -- Game People Play [in The Middle of The Night] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZWBw_gupXE

Another "game" song, this time a remix of the Peter Gabriel song:
Peter Gabriel (Massive Attack Remix) -- Games without Frontiers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mauZeyroS0Y

"Amp plays with Swooshy, Swooshy plays with Jade,
Jade plays with Tempi, Tempi's happy again,
Fash'ki plays with Leo, Ducky plays with Riks,
Psychy build an army, and Recko plays with it"

:)) (sorry, can't fit everybody in short song)

ps.: Rikso, I like this a tad better:

I'm aware that opinion is very specific human trait and from my point of view when we discuss music in general there is a lack of good music today.

Anyone heard of Rory Gallagher?
"Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like to be the world's greatest guitar player. His answer was, "Go ask Rory Gallagher''"

Rory Gallagher - Shin Kicker

Ian Curtis at his finest. Listening to this band its amazing to think that they were around in the late 70's, early 80s as the music is far ahead of its time.

As for new bands repackaging old music and making it their own;

Singing about the South Land:

Crosby Stills and Nash -- Southern Cross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuLBhxZUkmU

Mr. Young isn't Southern (he's Canadian) but he does have the Southern influence in his music (I guess hanging out of the above 3 guys has that effect).
